A stylist pitching fashion as "empowerment"? Okay, this we've got to understand!
Toronto-based Fashion Stylist Tania Tonello is the perfect person to introduce us to this new framework around how what you wear isn't something you need to master for the outside world...but rather for showcasing the inner, most beautiful YOU!
Q. What led you to the perspective that fashion was EMPOWERING?!
I came to this through my own experiences. I realized when I felt confident in what I was wearing, I carried myself differently and took greater risks. Now I have the privilege of helping others feel empowered through their style choices which is a dream come true.
Q: Your fave tips for choosing clothing that is flattering & makes you feel great?
FIT! It's all about the proper fit. Disregard the size number or letter on a label and focus on how the garment feels on your body. Anything that is too tight or too loose can distort your natural shape. A proper fit is a flattering fit.
Q: 3 things you wish everyone understood about fashion?
Fashion says so much about us without a word being spoken. First impressions are created in seconds. Think about what clothes you're wearing today and why you chose them. Every colour has meaning and evokes different emotions. Allow your fashion choices to express who you are and how you feel.
You don't have to be a millionaire to have an amazing wardrobe. Some of my favourite pieces are second-hand and super budget-friendly. They're also the most unique pieces in my closet.
Fashion should be fun! It's a means of self-expression and a way to celebrate art on our bodies. Take a chance and try something new!
Q: You're about to go out for a swanky event but have nothing "new" to wear...what's your go-to solution?!
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." It's okay to wear an outfit twice! Or a handful of times (yes, I said it). When you love a piece, celebrate it and wear it to special occasions. This reminds me of Tiffany Haddish's iconic Alexander McQueen white gown. She's worn it 8 times - from the Oscars to Saturday Night Live to a movie premiere and so on.
